Mod Your PS5 Controller Safely – High-Quality Parts Guide

Custom PS5 Controller Build Guide – Shop the Parts

Important Note: Some widely available controller mods — particularly paddle kits, clicky button upgrades, and internal trigger modifications — may seem attractive, but many of these are mass-produced using low-cost switches that aren’t designed for serious gaming.

While external accessories like custom shells and button sets are generally safe to use, internal parts often fail prematurely due to the use of generic, low-durability components.

At XP Controllers, we’ve seen the results firsthand through repeated warranty issues and inconsistent performance from these mass-produced kits. For the best long-term results, we recommend using professionally engineered components — like the ones we design and build in-house — that are rigorously tested to meet the demands of competitive and everyday gaming alike.

What makes your controllers so good?
I design and manufacture 99% of my parts in-house, ensuring top-notch quality control and unparalleled engineering.

This results in controllers with exceptional strength, durability, and a premium feel that stands out from competitors.

This is what holds our controllers above all others on the global stage as our parts and processes are constantly improving, if we think of something better, we will make it!

Why are your prices sometimes cheaper for some things but more expensive for others?

Many of the parts I design and manufacture in-house, which helps lower costs on some items since I bypass middlemen.

However, for certain products like my mouse click face buttons, I use high-quality, long-lasting mouse switches and custom-made buttons to accommodate their size.

While this adds a bit more to the price, it ensures superior durability compared to the weaker switches often found in other controllers.

What is the difference between mouse, mechanical, and tactile back buttons?
-Mouse Back Buttons:
These are adaptations of mouse switches into back buttons, offering a light touch with a true mouse click feel. They are rated for a minimum of 5 million actuations and use an 8mm cap.
-Mechanical Back Buttons:
Ultra-low profile keyboard switches with a 20 million lifespan and an 11mm cap. These buttons provide a smooth, consistent mouse response.
-Tactile Back Buttons:
These are not used at Budd's Controllers due to their poor quality. They are often rated for only 50k actuations and are a common failure point in repaired controllers, second only to trigger switches.

What is your placement for back buttons?
The standard placement is designed to be easily accessed by your ring and middle fingers. However, I am happy to customize button placement based on your preferences if possible. You can upload a photo with your preferred placement when placing your order.

How much does drift repair cost?
ALPS Thumbsticks: $45

HALL Sensors: $65
TMR Sensors: $85
I can also mount TMR sensors on ALPS units to maintain the factory feel while improving durability and precision.

What is a Hall Effect sensor and a TMR sensor?
Hall Effect Sensors:
These sensors use magnetic fields to detect thumbstick movement instead of physical contact. Unlike potentiometers, Hall Effect sensors are not rubbing components, meaning they do not wear out over time due to friction.

However, the internal mechanism (e.g., springs and pivots) can still experience wear and tear, but this typically takes years of use to become noticeable. Hall Effect sensors are precise, consistent, and immune to drift issues.
TMR Sensors (Tunnel Magnetoresistance):
TMR sensors work similarly to Hall Effect sensors by using magnetic fields for detection. However, they offer even greater sensitivity and responsiveness, making them an excellent choice for competitive gaming. Like Hall Effect sensors, TMR sensors do not suffer from frictional wear, and their internal mechanism usually lasts for several years under normal use.
Both types of sensors provide superior durability and precision compared to traditional potentiometers, which are prone to drift and degradation over time.

TMR is the better sensor out of the two but does cost ALOT more.

Will you sponsor me?
The likely answer is no, as I rarely offer sponsorships. However, I run a referral program where you can earn a free controller (excluding Edge and Elite models) by referring 10 orders.

Custom Shells, Paint, and Hydrodipping
Custom Shells:
You can order custom shells from Amazon and have them sent to me. For a small fee on top of the build, I will fit the custom shell to your controller.
Custom Paint:
Custom paint can be arranged! Once you place your order, I will have a tattoo artist contact you to discuss your design and paint preferences.
Hydrodipping:
Hydrodipping is available for one-off or production runs. If you need 10 or more shells, I can place a production run and store them onsite for your business, organization, or streaming channel.
